ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES

GENERAL ENGLISH (GE)

The General English (GE) program is designed to fulfill the need of those who want to learn and improve their communication skills in English, both spoken and written, in the day to day contexts.The program is designed with communicative and interactive learning concept to provide participants with interesting and stimulating activities to practice and use the language meaningfully. The program is offered in five levels (elementary, pre-­intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and pre-advanced), each of which last for 48 sessions of 100 minutes each (4800 minutes or 80 learning hours total).

ENGLISH FOR YOUNG LEARNERS (EYL)

English for Young Learners (EYL) is a program that is specifically designed for young children (aged 6 to 12 or elementary school pupils) to help them learn English the young ­learner-friendly and fun way. EYL uses a wholistic approach and various interesting media to help children develop their communicative skills in English. Eight levels are offered in this program, namely:

Elementary

1&2

Elementary 1 & 2 train the children’s receptive skills (listening and reading) and develop their vocabulary in order to enable them to respond appropriately to questions, requests and request given in English.

Pre-Intermediate

1&2

Pre-Intermediate 1 & 2 expand the children’s receptive skills while at the same time develop their productive skills (speaking and writing) using the vocabulary they have learned and grow their literacy skills.

Intermediate

1&2

Intermediate 1 & 2 are focused on developing the children’s responses and skills in initiating a conversation. The children also begin to learn complex literacy skills such as reading and understanding stories and reading and writing descriptions.

Upper-Intermediate

1&2

At this level, the types of learning activities are becoming more complex and comprehensive. For example, the children begin to learn to conduct an observation and present their findings.
  • Each level in the EYL program is taught in 24 sessions of l 00 minutes each (2400 minutes or 40 hours per level).

ENGLISH FOR TEENAGERS (EFT)

English for Teenagers (EFT) program is specifically designed for SMP (Junior High School) students. The program is aimed at helping junior high school students develop their real-context communicative skills, both in spoken and written English. EFT’s syllabus is also designed in such a way that its contents intersect with the national curriculum. Participants of this program will not only learn to hone their English communication skills but also receive practical assistance in doing their school work and tests. This program is offered in eight levels of 100 minute-24 sessions each (a total of 40 hours per level).

Elementary

1&2

At these levels, students learn to develop their receptive skills (listening and reading) and improve their vocabulary to enable them to respond appropriately to their interlocutors, both orally and through actions.

Pre-Intermediate

1&2

Students continue to develop their receptive skills while at the same time build up their productive skills (speaking and writing). Contextual vocabulary building is the focus of these levels.

Intermediate

1&2

Productive skills activities are the main focus of these levels. Upon completing these levels, students are expected to be able to initiate and respond to a conversation, understand passages, and express their personal experiences.

Upper-Intermediate

1&2

These levels offer students opportunities to learn higher level of English through various activities related to real-life situations. The levels focus on enhancing students’ productive skills further in a native-like context.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP)

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a tailor-made program created and designed to meet the needs of our customers from various sectors. Up to this date, UPI Language Center has designed and administered ESP programs for RSBI (pioneering schools of international standard) teachers, tourism and hospitality students and lecturers, science teachers, and English for International Conferences and English for Paper Writing (Academic Writing) ESP programs. ESP programs are non-regular and created only on the basis of customers’ request.

TOEFL PREPARATION COURSE

The TOEFL Preparation Course is designed to help participants prepare for the TOEFL Test and increase their score. The program focuses on providing the participants with proper and systematic strategies they can use to tackle problems in every part of the TOELF test, i.e. Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension.
The regular TOEFL Preparation program is an eight-week, 72-hour course, taught three times of three hour session per week. Private tuition is also available upon request for minimum of 10 hour-package.

IELTS PREPARATION COURSE

IELTS Preparation Course is designed to help participants prepare for the IELTS test or other similar tests and increase their score.
The program focuses on improving the participant’s listening, reading, speaking and writing skills that will be tested in the IELTS test. Participants will do a lot of practice and review activities for listening and reading, one-to-one interview practice and review for speaking and intensive drafting, reviewing and editing for writing.
The regular IELTS Preparation program is an eight-week, 96-hour course, taught four times of four hour session per week. Private tuition is also available for a min um um of 10 hour-package.

TOEIC PREPARATION COURSE

TOEIC Preparation course is non-regular offering. The program is available only by request.

BIPA (INDONESIAN FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE SPEAKERS)

REGULAR BIPA PROGRAM

The Regular BIPA Program is designed to help participants learn to communicate in Indonesian in various situations and contexts. The program is offered in six levels organized on the basis of Indonesian Qualification Framework (IQF). Sessions are organized twice a week, each lasting for two hours. The program is available three times a year: January – April, May – August, and September – December periods.

Dasar 1

(Pre-Elementary)

50 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to understand and use contextual expressions to introduce oneself and fulfill daily routines and needs in a simple manner to communicate with a very cooperative interlocutor.

Dasar 2

(Elementary)

50 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to express their feelings in a simple manner, describe the surrounding environment, and communicate their daily needs and routine

Dasar 3

(Pre-Intermediate)

50 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to express their experiences, hopes, goals, and plans briefly and in a coherent manner with reasons in the context of their daily life and work.

Menengah 1

(Intermediate)

50 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to report their observations of events and express their ideas about topics in their field, both abstact and concrete, fairly fluently without obstacles that interfere with their interlocutor’s understanding.

Menengah 2

(Upper-Intermediate)

60 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to understandlong and complex texts and express viewpoint ideas in various topics spontaneously and fluently almost without any obstacles, except in profession and academic and academic specific fields.

Lanjut 1

(Advanced)

60 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to understand long and complex texts that contain implied meanings and express ideas in a clear, structured, systematic and detailed language, fluently and spontaneously, appropriate to speech situation for social and professional needs, except in complex academic field (scientific work).

Lanjut 2

(Post-Advanced)

60 hours

Upon completing this level, participants are expected to be able to understand information from nearly any field easily and express ideas spontaneously, fluently and accurately with the ability to discern shades of meanings and reconstruct arguments and data in a coherent presentation.

PRIVATE TUITION PROGRAM

BIPA Private Tuition Program is a one-to-one (one student, one teacher) tuition for students who want to have a more personalized instructional content and more flexible schedule and setting. Application for this program is open all-year-round.

ICT (IN-COUNTRY TRAINING) PROGRAM

The ICT Program was originally designed as a joint program between UPI Language Center and Defense School of Languages (DFSL) of the Australian Defense Force (ADF) where ADF officers learning Indonesian in Australia were sent to Indonesia to advance their knowledge of both the Indonesian language and Indonesian culture. The duration of the program is between two weeks and twelve months. The two week program is intended for groups of beginner students who need to practice their Indonesian and at the same time get to know the Indonesian culture, or for individuals who want to have a one-to­one Indonesian course. The twelve-month program is designed as an immersion or semi-immersion program for individuals who want to have an in-depth mastery and knowlege of the Indonesian language and culture
This program is now also available and being offered for diplomatic staff, business persons, academicians and students who need to learn the Indonesian language and culture prior to or in preparation of their official assignment or study in Indonesia.

KNB AND DARMASISWA PROGRAMS

The KNB is a joint program between UPI Language Center and the Indonesian government. The program is designed to provide Indonesian course for the grantees of KNB (Developing Countries Cooperation) Scholarship provided by the Indonesian government to enable them to attend academic courses conducted in Indonesian.
The Darmasiswa Program is the Indonesian government’s eight-month scholarship given to selected grantees from different parts of the world to learn the Indonesian language and culture in different parts of Indonesia. As such, the BIPA Darmasiswa is an intensive immersion program that provides the participants with knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia and the Indonesian culture.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE COURSE

The Japanese language course is offered in 10 levels, from basic to advanced. The content of these levels are geared towards achieving Japanese language proficiency that correspond to the N5 to N1 levels of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).

KOREAN LANGUAGE COURSE

The Korean Language course is opened in response to increasing bilateral relations between Indonesia and Korea, particularly in the fields of economy, investment, human resources, education and culture, and also the increasing popularity of Korean popular culture such as K-Pop and Korean films and dramas among Indonesian youths.
The Korean language course is a regular course offered in nine levels, each consisting of 50 hours of instruction.

TOPIK PREPARATION COURSE

TOPIK preparation course is a course designed to help candidates of test takers prepare for the test. TOPIK is a written test designed to measure the ability of non-native speakers for expression and comprehension in the Korean language.
TOPIK test measures proficiency in reading, writing, and listening comprehension in the Korean language. The test has three different levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Further accuracy is expressed through six grades, two matched to each level to evaluate proficiency.
Purpose of the test

• To propagate and set direction for learning Korean for non-native Korean speakers and overseas Koreans.
• To measure and evaluate their Korean language skills and utilize the results for admission to Korean colleges and job-seeking

OTHER FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES

In addition to Japanese and Korean language courses, UPI Language Center also offers courses in other foreign languages. Two of them, Arabic and French, were offered in the past but have recently been paused due to lack of interest.
