Brief Story

UPI Language Center is one of the oldest university language centers in Indonesia. Established by the Directorate General of Higher Education in the early 1970s by the name of Balai Bahasa IKIP Bandung, UPI Language Center has since developed into one of most prominent university language centers in the country. Its progressive management is rooted in the long professional tradition held by its leadership, which up to this date has been consecutively held by some of the country’s most respected names in language education. Over the past four decades, UPI Language Center has undergone various changes to reflect the changes that have taken place in the sphere of language education, in the university’s policy and the demands and the expectations that the public has on it. Some of these changes were part of the internally-generated growing processes – like changes in program structure and offerings, the syllabi, etc.; however, some of these changes were reflective of the external condition, upon which The Language Center needed to make adjustments. When IKIP Bandung (Bandung Institute of Teacher Training and Pedagogy}, its parent institution, became a university in 1999 and later on autonomous public university in 2004, our name also changed from Balai Bahasa IKIP Bandung to Balai Bahasa UPI or UPI Language Center or simply The Language Center as it is known today.

Despite the name change, our core values and commitment to providing the best services in language education and other language services remain the guiding principles for our development.
